The global recruitment phase has successfully concluded, and the 2026 HKU International Techno-Entrepreneurship Challenge has officially advanced to the Semi-Final stage.

Overall Application Results & Insights

  • Regional Highlight:

    The Hong Kong & Overseas Region emerged as the largest division, accounting for 50% of total global entries and successfully attracting top overseas students and international tech teams.

  • Elite Talent Pool:

    Globally, 67% of the teams feature HKU backgrounds, competing alongside exceptional talent from Oxford, Cambridge, Tsinghua, and other world-renowned universities.

  • Dominant Tech Tracks:

    AI & Digitalization and Biotech & Health have emerged as the leading sectors for innovation this year.

  • High Investment Readiness:

    This cohort demonstrates strong commercial potential, with 73% of projects at the prototype stage or beyond, and 80% already engaged in Seed & Angel investment rounds.

Teams from the five competition zones — Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong, and Overseas — will now showcase their innovations as they compete for a place in the Grand Finale.

Hong Kong and Overseas Semi-Finals

The Hong Kong and Overseas preliminary rounds will take place on August 8. After a rigorous review process, 24 outstanding teams have been selected to advance, comprising 12 teams in the Start-up Division and 12 teams in the Growth Division.

The winning teams — 5 from the Start-up track and 4 from the Growth track — will represent the Hong Kong and Overseas regions on the international stage, competing alongside the world’s top innovation teams.

The shortlisted projects focus on cutting-edge fields such as biotechnology, artificial intelligence, new materials, and new energy, with applications spanning medical devices, educational technologies, robotics, and chip development.

Distinguished judges from the HKU Entrepreneurship Engine Fund and the HKU Super Angel Network will evaluate the teams during the regional competition.

All projects advancing to the Grand Finale will have the opportunity to join HKU’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and access co-working spaces at iDendron in both Hong Kong and Shenzhen, becoming part of a dynamic and supportive startup community.
