Dr. Yong Zhang is a biomedical industry leader with over 20 years of experience in biotechnology, genomics, bioinformatics and international standardisation. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Software from Peking University and a PhD in Bioinformatics. From 2001 to 2015, he worked at BGI on omics research and later served as Assistant President. Between 2011 and 2014, he was the founding leader of the China National GeneBank in Shenzhen, taking overall responsibility for its planning, design, construction and operations. He currently serves as Director of the China National GeneBank.

Since joining ISO/TC 276 Biotechnology in 2014, Dr. Zhang has played an active role in international biotechnology standardisation, including previously serving as Co-Convenor of the Working Group on Biobanks and Bioresources. He has led the development of the world’s first three ISO standards on high-throughput sequencing—ISO 20397-1:2022, ISO 20397-2:2021 and ISO 20397-3:2025—as well as the first two ISO standards on stem-cell data, ISO 8472-1:2024 and ISO 8472-2:2026. He is also the Project Leader for ISO/CD 25430-1, the world’s first international standard project on organoids. Dr. Zhang has published 84 SCI-indexed papers (h-index 54), authored seven books and holds 23 patents.
